About Dr Somnath Sinha
After completion of his post-graduation MD (Med) he worked as a Senior Registrar in medicine in a teaching hospital in Kolkata, India and went to UK in the early 1990’s and completed dual specialist registrar training leading to CCST (certificate of completion of specialist training) in general medicine and geriatrics (incorporating training in palliative medicine at St Ann’s Hospice) and worked as Consultant Physician and Geriatrician in UK registered in the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. He also trained in management and teaching as part of the MSc in Geriatrics Salford University incorporated in the Specialist Registrar Training.
He served as member of Clinical Excellence Awards committee and Public Health Implementation Group and has been the lead for Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia. Som took part in many research and audit projects (National and Regional) including, Dysphagia in elderly acute stroke patients, PD Med Trial, National Incontinence Audit, and Dopamine Transporter Scan (DAT) and published case report on Supranuclear Palsy and DAT Scan. He wrote a chapter in an international multi-author textbook of cardiology. He introduced apomorphine protocol in the hospital and his patient was the third in UK to undergo Duodopa infusion via PEJ and later on presented at the Royal College of Edinburgh.
Som came to Australia more than a decade ago and worked in the SE corner of QLD including Gold Coast prior to moving to Mackay as the Clinical Director Medicine at the Base Hospital (a position that he has since relinquished). He has been instrumental in developing the profile of medicine in Mackay taking it to a level 2 teaching hospital and expanding the specialist physician workforce and placed Mackay on the map for medical training. He developed the Parkinson’s Disease clinic and was member of the ‘Closing the Gap’ health initiative in his previous HHS. Currently he is supervising a research protocol in dementia.
